Secrets to Upleveling your Photography Business

You’ve been hustling away at building your biz. You’re proud of the progress you’ve made, but you’re itching to book more dream clients and finally work smarter (not harder). Today I’m sharing my top tips for unleveling your photography business!


Take it from me – you’ll wish you’d started sooner! Even if you aren’t busy in this moment, one day you will get there. Systems help you run your business quickly and consistently (so you can spend more time on the stuff you actually enjoy!!) I personally LOVE Honeybook to keep organized. I can check my workflows daily to see which clients need followed up with, send contracts and invoices with a click, and handle all my bookkeeping in one place! There’s about a bazillion things you could be spending your hard-earned dollas on. Whether it’s gear, software, online courses, or a business coach, there’s a lot of noise in the industry screaming you NEED xyz to be successful. I’m not saying go into debt buying all the things, but you should definitely be investing in your craft if you want to land those higher-end clients. A wise person once told me that if you aren’t willing to invest in yourself, then why should someone else be willing to pay you?? Use your slow season to take an online course, or offer free shoots to test out some new gear and posing techniques!


(I know, I know. We all dread this exercise!!)

You may have started your biz saying “YES” to any and every photoshoot opportunity that came your way. There is no shame in that game – I believe we all start somewhere and shooting different things actually HELPS you test the waters and narrow down what it is you enjoy photographing.

But now that you’ve got some experience under your belt, it’s time to focus on which events made your heart skip a beat, or which clients you’ve LOVED working with. Make a list of your top 3 clients or projects you’ve done in the past. How did they find you? What made you fall in love them? What was their budget? Once you get a grasp of your ideal client, don’t be afraid to start being more intentional about the jobs you take on. When you turn away work that’s the wrong fit, it gives you more time for the right things!!
