I’m sooo excited to recap Bespoke 2.0 for you all today! Lindsey and I shared the greatest honor of hosting 16 sweet, driven + talented photographers at our second workshop, this time at the Chicago History Museum! It was a jam-packed day of education centered around building successful wedding photography businesses, followed by a beautiful […]
This is one of the most common questions I get asked from other photographers! (It makes sense right… getting started is always the hardest part!) In today’s blog post, I’m sharing 3 tips for those who are interested in entering the world of wedding photography!
1. Start as an assistant, then second shoot.
The world of wedding photography is fast-paced and complex, and it takes time to learn the ins and outs. Unlike portrait sessions, there is no room for error on a wedding day. You don’t want to be learning for the first time, on the job!!
Booking work as an assistant or second shooter is an amazing place to start. Find a local photographer who you like and respect, who’s a step or two ahead of where you’d like to be. Offer to work for them for free, or help carry their gear. Put their needs + clients first, and be a sponge to absorb all the knowledge they have to share!
2. Practice with low-risk clients
Whether it’s family or a close friend, or someone who can’t afford a super experienced professional, booking low-risk clients at first helps alleviate some of the pressure of a wedding day.
My first wedding clients were college friends who I’d recently graduated with, who didn’t have huge budgets for their weddings. It was much more laidback working with people I knew, and it and allowed me to gain confidence all while building up my portfolio!!
3. Refine with education
It’s amazing what skills you can learn on the internet!!! From lighting to posing, marketing to pricing, there is loads of online education at your disposal. I recommend investing in a combination of digital courses as well as in-person workshops to build up your knowledge. Or, if you’re on a tight budget, YouTube is a great resource too!!
We’re living in a post-pandemic world and I don’t know about you, but I’m navigating the busiest season I’ve ever seen in my photography career!! Now feels like the right time to talk about the elephant in the room… burnout. If you’re a creator of any kind, whether you’re a fellow photographer, an entrepreneur or […]
One of the questions I get asked most often is what types of cameras and lenses I use, and which are my favorites. This is such a tough one to answer, because it typically depends on what I’m shooting, and in reality I love ALL my Canon gear!! Today I thought I’d do a little breakdown of what comes with me to every wedding.
I can’t believe I finally get to say that the first Bespoke Workshop is in the books!!
Last month, one of my biggest biz dreams came true. Alongside my photographer bestie Lindsey and our planner pal Danielle of Ohana Events, we welcomed 20 talented photographers from all over the U.S. to the Chicago area for a full day of photography education and styled shoots. Our goal was to design a workshop that would change our attendees’ businesses and lives forever (what we didn’t see coming was how much the day would also change ours!!)
