Bespoke Workshop 2.0 at Chicago History Museum

This is one of the most common questions I get asked from other photographers! (It makes sense right… getting started is always the hardest part!) In today’s blog post, I’m sharing 3 tips for those who are interested in entering the world of wedding photography!

1. Start as an assistant, then second shoot.
The world of wedding photography is fast-paced and complex, and it takes time to learn the ins and outs. Unlike portrait sessions, there is no room for error on a wedding day. You don’t want to be learning for the first time, on the job!!
Booking work as an assistant or second shooter is an amazing place to start. Find a local photographer who you like and respect, who’s a step or two ahead of where you’d like to be. Offer to work for them for free, or help carry their gear. Put their needs + clients first, and be a sponge to absorb all the knowledge they have to share!

2. Practice with low-risk clients
Whether it’s family or a close friend, or someone who can’t afford a super experienced professional, booking low-risk clients at first helps alleviate some of the pressure of a wedding day.
My first wedding clients were college friends who I’d recently graduated with, who didn’t have huge budgets for their weddings. It was much more laidback working with people I knew, and it and allowed me to gain confidence all while building up my portfolio!!

3. Refine with education
It’s amazing what skills you can learn on the internet!!! From lighting to posing, marketing to pricing, there is loads of online education at your disposal. I recommend investing in a combination of digital courses as well as in-person workshops to build up your knowledge. Or, if you’re on a tight budget, YouTube is a great resource too!!

How to start shooting weddings

After their first date over tacos and beer, these two knew they were endgame!! As Katie + Brad graduated college and navigated life together, they always remained on the same page and their love grew stronger and stronger. In 2019, Brad planned a surprise proposal at Monet’s garden in Giverney, France… talk about a DREAM!!! Katie’s whole family was there to witness and celebrate the occasion!

After some frustrating postponements (thanks Covid!), I FINALLY got to host my dream 30th birthday celebration last month!! Anyone who knows me knows that I love all things witchy, so I decided to throw a nontraditional Crystal Visions party downtown Chicago.

As we navigate our early 30’s and approach 5 years of marriage, Keith and I often get asked when we’re planning on having kids. I sometimes joke that my baby has four legs + lots of yellow fur… but in all seriousness, the desire to be a mom isn’t currently on my heart. There are obvious reasons why I don’t feel ready… I love to sleep in, I’m busy chasing career goals, I spend almost every second of my free time traveling, and the list goes on!

I’m not sure if I want kids

One of the things I love about photography is that no two shoots are ever the same. Even here in Chicago, where I work most often, my couples are always bringing me to new and fun places. Amber + Ryan’s engagement session was no exception!

Spend just a few minutes in their presence and you’ll feel right at home. They are sweet and caring… both for each other and for those around them. But my favorite thing about Val and Alex?? They truly are the best of friends! You can see it in the warm smiles they share and in […]

Lilly and Nathan met at a movie night with mutual friends. They quickly bonded over their shared affection of snacks and climbing. Their love was a slow burn… both resisted romantic feelings because they were “just friends”. They couldn’t deny all the things they had in common though – music, food, and a love for the outdoors. Lilly said she realized her feelings for Nathan when she couldn’t stop smiling when talking about him, and finally told him that she had a crush on him. They were officially dating less than a week later, and the rest is history!!!

It’s time for a life update (more like pupdate!) because Keith and I got a puppy!! We picked up Camper on January 25 and it’s been a whirlwind of a first month with him. I’m excited to fill you guys in on the details today!

Sydney + Nick had just moved to Chicago from Texas. It was their first snowy winter ever, and to document the occasion we met up to frolic + freeze our butts off for photos!!! Their puppers Jax + Miller certainly had fun (see their happy faces below!) WELCOME to the Midwest, Walden fam!! I’m thankful […]
